Dear Members and Friends of Piedmont Community Church,

In the letter of James in the new Testament it says “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” I believe that orphans and widows are mentioned specifically because in that day and time they were the most vulnerable groups in society. In those days, a woman who lost her husband had no way to work to make a living. Children who lost a father became vulnerable to starvation.

In many parts of the world this is still the case. In 2003 Piedmont Church established a sister church relationship with Kafita Presbyterian Church an 8,000 member congregation in Lilongwe Malawi. Malawi has the world’s lowest gross national income per capita according to a report from the World Bank. Most members of Kafita make a living as subsistence farmers. This year’s Christmas offering will go to the Kafita Church Widows and Orphans fund. This fund is managed by the elders of Kafita church and is used to support most vulnerable members of their congregation and community.

The good news is that your money goes a long way toward doing good in Malawi. One hundred dollars can provide 5 families with Nsima the staple food for a month. Over 100 members of Piedmont Church have visited our sister church in Malawi and many of you met the pastor and several members of Kafita on their visits here.

I encourage you to generously support this year’s Christmas offering to help the neediest members of our sister church. Please make checks payable to Piedmont Community Church using the memo “Christmas Offering” or visit our website to give online. May God bless you and your family as we celebrate the great joy of our savior’s birth.

Yours in Christ,

Dr. William H. McNabb, Senior Minister
