The Rev. Scott Kail
Pastor of Student Ministries

Scott comes to Piedmont Community Church from New Life Community Church, Sayville, NY, where he has served as Pastor to Students since 1997. At New Life, Scott oversaw the ministry of 90 active students drawn from 7 high schools and 9 middle schools. During his 6 years of leadership, the student ministries program broadened in vision and scope. It proved to be a backbone of stability and encouragement in the life of a church that has undergone many changes in worship, leadership structure, and staffing.

Integral to Scott's philosophy of youth ministry is establishing and equipping a team of adults that love Christ and are willing to build meaningful relationships with young people. Scott's skills in program building were apparent during his three years as Director of Student Ministries at Colorado Community Church. Hired 8 months after the church's inception, Scott guided the ministry from a Sunday School class into a vibrant Youth Ministry involving 325 middle and senior high students from 11 high schools and 14 middle schools. He credits this amazing growth to the power of prayer and the commitment of interns, volunteer leaders, student leaders, and a parent board under his leadership.

Scott and his spouse, Judy, met in college in Virginia while working with the youth group at their church. They married two years later. After completing Scott's studies in the Denver area, Judy and Scott followed calls to youth ministry in New Mexico, Virginia, and Colorado. And happily, their family grew.
Keaton, his eldest, loves the arts, music, and reading; he recently graduated from Chapman University in southern California with a degree in Film Studies and English Literature. Brandt is in his second year of attending California State University Chico where he also plays Lacrosse.  Garrett, the youngest, will be entering high school in the fall of ’09 and enjoys hanging out with friends as well as anything fun.

Judy managed "Cottage and Company," a home furnishings store on Long Island, where she made all things beautiful. Shopping, a good book, fine wine, silence, and her three dogs are also her passions. On his days off, you'll likely find Scott on the golf course and coaching football at Piedmont High School.  All the Kails participate regularly in "forced family fun" with laughter and healthy competition, whether playing a board game, taking a day trip, sharing a lane at the bowling alley, or eating out.

Scott received his B.A. in Youth Ministry from Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, CO. He also completed two years of undergraduate study at James Madison University in VA and maintains "special student" status towards the M.A. degree at Denver Seminary, Denver, CO.

Scott was ordained in 1989 in the National Association of Evangelical Churches of America. Building on more than 25 years of success in student ministry, Scott became a youth ministry consultant in 2000. His work with other pastors on the methods and programs he has found effective includes onsite evaluation and direction, speaking at retreats and leadership seminars, and a consultant YSconsults. Scott continues to consult with other youth ministry leaders and remains an active participant in national conferences that allow him to keep his skills sharp, stay up on new developments and trends, and share expertise from across the country.
