A
Vision for Putting Faith into Action
PCC functions
as an independent Christian institution and is governed by both ordained
staff and lay leaders. A variety of volunteer Boards oversees the programming
of parish life. The vibrant work and mission of PCC is always growing
and evolving, thanks to the support of hundreds who donate their time,
talents, and treasures, equipping one another to be ministers who serve
God no matter what their task at hand. The
vision for Lay Ministries at Piedmont Community Church is not really a
new concept; as you can see in these verses from Ephesians, the vision
has been around for thousands and thousands of years:
But
each of us has been given a special gift, a particular share in the
bounty of Christ. And it is he who has given some to be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip God's
people for work in his service for the building up of the body of Christ.
- Ephesians 4:7, 11 & 12 (Revised English Bible)

Building
on the current foundation and involvement of our members, PCC's Lay Ministries
engage people in spiritual growth through the use of their God-given gifts
in service to each other, to the church and to the wider community. The
Equipping Ministry Coordinating Team is committed to building and facilitating
a system of relationships that will enable Piedmont Community Church to
be a welcoming and responsive church. Its members focus on the following
areas:
- assisting
individuals in the discovery their God-given gifts, talents and interests.
- matching
them with a group or ministry that makes the best use of those gifts,
talents, and interests.
- helping
visitors feel comfortable, welcome and included.
- actively
inviting people into the life of the church.
- encouraging
spiritual growth through service to each other, to the church, and to
the wider community.
- assisting
in establishment of new ministries or groups of interest

President’s Message
by Bob Leslie
Over this past summer I envisioned a need for those serving as leaders of the church to have a better understanding of the inter-relationships of the various boards and ministries. After discussing my concerns with Bill McNabb and Judy Wright of the Equipping Ministry Team, we developed a program and scheduled a leadership retreat for Saturday, November 15th at the church.
The turnout exceeded our expectations. We had 52 participants. The feedback we received after the event by way of written evaluations confirmed that it was a worth while endeavor. We explored what it means spiritually to be a Christian leader in today’s world. Some of us had attended a leadership conference in August in Livermore and at that conference we heard several outstanding speakers on leadership, one being Bill George, a Harvard Business School professor and former CEO of Medtronic, who spoke on “Finding Your True North”. A video of his presentation was shown at the retreat. Liz Becker, a former PCC trustee, who owns a business specializing in leadership training, then led us in a discussion designed to improve our church leadership capabilities.
The retreat concluded with each board member, ministry member, and staff member briefly explaining what his or her leadership role is in the furtherance of our church’s objectives. We are developing an organizational chart, a draft of which was shared with the participants at the retreat. We have over 50 boards, committees and teams that run our church and their interrelationship has never before been reduced to writing. We received constructive comments on this “work in progress” at the retreat and expect to have a the final version available to the church members soon.
I appreciate the support our leaders made in attending this retreat and taking time out of their busy schedules to participate. A special thanks to the Equipping Ministry Team for their hard work in putting this program together, and to Bill McNabb for providing spiritual guidance, and to Liz Becker for sharing her expertise.
