Music by Bach and Handel On Sunday, August 3, 2008, Christa Pfeiffer, Ed Betts, Priscilla Essert, Steve Main, and a professional Chamber Ensemble will offer music by Bach and Handel at the 10am worship service. Selections will include movements from Bach’s 2nd Orchestral Suite, “Domine Deus” from the B minor Mass, as well as the Handel Chandos duet “O worship the Lord.” This is gorgeous, uplifting music that will deeply enrich your worship experience. Don’t miss it! |

The Piedmont Forum: Saving Paradise Rita Brock will discuss her new book, Saving Paradise, which offers a fascinating new lens on the history of Christianity. It addresses issues of ecology, imperialism, peace and “holy” war. And it promotes the idea that salvation is primarily about “paradise in this world and in this life,” not in heaven. As theologians Rita Brock and Rebecca Parker travelled the Mediterranean world in search of art depicting the crucified Christ, they discovered something interesting: It took Jesus a millennium to die! In other words, during the first thousand years of Christianity, sanctuaries were filled with images of Christ as a living presence in a vibrant world not as a crucified Messiah. He is portrayed as shepherd, teacher, healer; a resurrected savior, an enthroned god; an infant, a youth, a bearded elder – but never dead. So what happened? Why the change? And does it make any difference to us today? |
